Writing for Children - Writing Tips for Creative Kids Part I

Writing can be fun, educational and very rewarding. Even if you are a young person, you have interesting things to contribute. Use your voice to give fresh, young perspectives on different subjects.

Do not think that just because you are young that you do not create the same way that adults do. Actually, kids tend to be better in touch with their imagination and they do not over analyze things. They just write and that is beautiful. As a young person, you have many benefits and you are very likely to turn out a great story.

One important thing to remember is to not get bogged down in details. Now, there is a fine line there because you want to give your readers enough so that they know what is going on and the story makes sense, but you do not want to bore them to death with an abundance of details. Read how some other writers handle this. Stephen King, for example, gives a great deal of detail, but just enough to give you a good mental picture. He does not overdo it. You may have to play with it a little before you find for yourself what is too little, too much and just right.

There are some steps that you can follow that will help you get your story on paper.

Step 1: Idea

Before you start to write, you need to have an idea of a subject. Think about topics, experiences that you have had and even stories that you have heard. Sometimes you may have an idea just jump into your head and your imagination runs away with it. Do not be afraid when this happens; go with it! Keep a notebook and pen with you at all times so that you can write down your ideas as they come to you.

Your favorite books, stories, photos, paintings, sculpture, television shows, and even comic books can serve to inspire you. Do not limit yourself to certain areas of inspiration; it can come from anywhere. It is important, though, that you never copy someone else's work. This is called plagiarism and it is not only unethical, but illegal as well. You can, though, use other people's works to inspire you and get you moving creatively in a certain direction.

You can also combine great ideas from different areas. Do not be afraid to ask questions like "what if?" Let your imagination go and do not be afraid to dream.

Writing for Children - How to Keep Their Interest

Whether you are writing a book for children, writing fables for children or writing short stories, every word has to count. Children are just as capable of enjoying a book as an adult enjoys, as long as you keep their attention. When writing for children, you should make the hero or protagonist older than they are. Kids do not want to read about somebody younger or even the same age. If your story has a moral, then do not ram in it their face. Make it subtle. Kids do not want to feel that you are preaching something. They just want to enjoy your story, fable, or book.
