When writing news articles, it is important to have all the facts correct and omit or gloss over any you are not sure about, as this is better than stating incorrect information. News articles need to be precise and logical. When writing a news article, you need to begin with what is called "the lead." This is the "who, what, when, where, how and why" of the article, or all the key points.
Towards the end of the news article, you can include other information of lesser importance, finishing off with the least essential information. If you write a good news article, the reader will be sucked in at the beginning and happy to read the whole article. If you bring up less interesting information early on, the reader will probably abandon your article and start reading something else instead. Writing news-style is about giving the juiciest pieces of information at the beginning. Keep sentences short and to the point.
Of all the rules for writing feature articles, the best advice is to use all your senses. Feature articles are much more descriptive than news articles. For example, a news article might say, "the injured woman made her way to the emergency room." A feature article would say, "the injured woman, dragging her bleeding leg along the tiled floor, limped alone bravely to the emergency room."
A feature article adds a lot to the reader's understanding of what happened and a good description helps the reader to feel like they were at the scene. Use colors, sounds and smells as well as the way things looked. Anything that helps the reader to picture the scene is good. As for steps in writing feature articles, tell it like a story from the beginning to the end, making sure the story makes sense and everything is written down in a logical and correct order.
